Old White Clock

While heading home from one of my favorite stores (The Home Depot of course!) I stopped at a local yard sale and managed some great finds. One of them was an old wooden clock that I absolutely fell in love with. It needed a little makeover but worked perfectly.
(Left to right: Old Cigar Box, Wooden Clock, Cream Pitcher, Picture Frame)

Even better than finding these gorgeous pieces is that everything was half off. So I got everything for a grand total of $3.50! I love fall but I am going to miss yard sales.

I knew exactly what I wanted to do with the clock as soon as I saw it. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White and I wanted to try out some gold flake that I have had in my craft cabinet but just hadn't had the right piece to use it on yet.

I am happy to say, it is complete! Here is the finished product. I'd love to hear your feedback in the comments below!

Now Following Friday

So I have a bit of a redneck side. I truly enjoy a beautiful dear head on the wall (although I am not much of a hunter). Here is a great product for those of us who are a little country but still like to keep it classy.

Now Following...

These faux taxidermy heads come in a variety of different animals and colors and the option of glitter. I can't wait to get my hands on one. And if you haven't seen it already, check out their feature in Country Living Magazine, page 12 of the October issue.

Fall Activity Jar

I want to start be apologizing that it has been so long since my last post. There have been some big changed in the Curran household and I had to adjust my daily routine a bit. But I am back in action and ready to start blogging again!

It's Fall Y'all!!

I love the colors, the smells, the food, and lets not forget THE DECORATING. Another one of my favorite things about fall is the fun! There are so many kid friendly activities for this time of year. Our family always has a hard time deciding what to first. So this year to make it a little easier and a bit more exciting, we decided to create a Fall Activity Jar.
It was really very simple to create. I picked a couple of fun crafts and activities that our family enjoys and wrote them down on popsicle sticks. I then separated them into 3 categories and gave each a color. Crafts (yellow), activities that can be done at home (orange), and activities that require us go somewhere (red). I picked a proper size jar that I had saved in my craft cabinet (I have a whole bunch that I save from time to time just in case!) and decorated it with some burlap and ribbon.

When your family has some free time, let the kids pick a stick and enjoy!

Now Following Friday

Call me crazy, but I vacuum everyday. I am constantly going through closets and filling bags for goodwill. And lists, I'm always making lists or filling out calendars and trying to stay organized. But, there are two times a year when I do major cleaning and literally go through the entire house and get rid of things we don't need. I truly feel that having too much clutter and junk in my home weighs down my spirit. After a good clean out I feel I can breathe again! There is one blog in particular I love getting tips and ideas on organization from:

Now Following...

From storage, to pantry's, to printables, this girl has it all to get you organized and ready for the coming season. Jen is a stay at home mom to 3 handsome little boys and has made it a point to keep her life organized so that she can spend as much time with her family as possible.
" I also read somewhere that for every minute invested in getting organized, an hour is earned."-Jen.
And I believe it!
If you share in her love of organization like I do, check out her blog and utilize her talents. Spend more time with your family, and less time looking for "stuff"!

New TV Obsession

Obsessed much? Why yes, I am. I have just come across an HGTV show called Fixer Upper. Texas power couple Chip and Joanna Gaines have been renovating homes for more than 12 years and have keen eye for finding homes with that southern charm potential. They just need a little help getting there. Clients are given an option of 3 different houses to choose from and once a decision has been made, The Gaines, get to work taking it from drab to fab! Not only do they have this fantastic T.V. show, but they also have a successful boutique, Magnolia Market, real estate company, Magnolia Realty, and Magnolia Villas, their very own homes. One more thing I absolutely adore about the Gaines family, they have FOUR children! Proof that mom's rock! You can be family oriented and successful. Even cuter, they let their kids come along and help them with the rehabs and decorating. Way to give them that warm, fuzzy feeling of accomplishment, when you finally get to stand back and admire what you have created, early on in life! So if you love family oriented design... Tune in tonight! New episodes are Thursdays 9pm/8pm Central and if you switch over to HGTV a couple of hours earlier (that is if your T.V. isn't permanently on this channel like mine is) you can even catch some of the previous episodes. You'll fall in love too, promise.

Now Following Friday!

I am so excited to reveal this blog. Mostly because the writer, Layla Palmer, took the same interior design course at NYIAD as I am taking now! What better to help you push on in your dreams than to see someone who took the same steps as you and is a huge success! This southern beauty and her hubby have appeared on HGTV on more than one occasion and have been featured in a number magazines and of course, has a very successful blog. One very cool feature of her blog is Pick My Presto. Readers submit pictures of rooms in their homes they need help coming up with designs for and Layla virtually redesigns the room for them! Another post I always look forward to seeing is updates on their adoption process. They have remained positive and strong through this long process but are SO close to growing their family from 2 to 3! Check her out at The Lettered Cottage

Milk Paint

So, I discovered about a week ago that the store I purchase my Annie Sloan Chalk Paint from is no longer going to be carrying her paint. At first I was a bit frantic. There is another store that carries it, but it is an hour away from me! Then I remembered seeing another type of paint on the Miss Mustard Seed blog that I follow, milk paint. I decided to do some research on it and was pleasantly surprised! It comes in an array of colors (all with super cute names) and is actually cheaper than Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. I was actually able to order it, pay for shipping, and still spend less than driving to my local retailer. I decided to give it a try!

Well it came! I ordered a bag of Apron Strings, a coral color, Curio, a dark brown, and Ironstone, white.
This paint comes in a powder form and you mix with water to achieve your desired consistency. You can also add in a bonding agent to help the paint adhere better depending on the surface you are working with.

The first project I am going to tackle using Milk Paint is our oak entertainment stand I purchase about a year ago. $50 on Craigslist! The color just doesn't suit our home so I will be using the Iron Stone white color and a dark stain on top. I will post pictures tomorrow and let you know how this Annie Sloan girl feels about the newly discovered Milk Paint!

Door Knob Hangers

My husband Jeff used to be in a band in high school. Over the years his collection of instruments has grown to include 4 guitars, 1 banjo, and a keyboard. When we moved into our home we were using his old guitar stands that sat on the floor. That concept became a problem as our second child began to walk. The instruments were constantly being knocked over by curious hands and smudged with all kinds of who-knows-what stickiness. We found a number of wall hangers at the guitar store but they were not very attractive and definitely did not fit in with our decor. I wanted a way to get them up off of the floor and still have a decorative feel. Naturally I went to Pinterest.

Among the handful of solutions for my problem was a door knob hanger concept where you hang the guitars using a twisting method. It was perfect! I ran down to my local Hobby Lobby (I could seriously live there) in search of supplies to help me execute the design.

Supplies included:
3- 5"x7" Natural Wood Plaques (I choose a rectangle, but the options are endless!)
3- Decorative Knobs (The options for these are even larger.)
1- Spool Of Twine

Tools you will need include:
A Drill & Drill Bits
A Dremel
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in the colors of your choice
Annie Sloan Clear & Dark Waxes
Paint & Wax Brushes
Metal Wall Hangers
Heavy Duty Glue (I prefer Gorilla Glue) and
Built-up Frustration (I'll explain below.)

Unfortunately I did not take a picture of this first part of the process but, it is the easiest part. I took my wood plaques outside and threw them at the ground (great therapy!). I choose an array of surfaces ranging from the concrete sidewalk to our gravel driveway and even the yard after they were banged up to get a little dirt down in the dings and dents.

After the distressing, I gave the first plaque 2 coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White

Once the second coat was dry, I did a quick all over coat of Annie Sloan Clear Wax followed by Annie Sloan Dark Wax. Now be careful when using the dark wax. It is very dense and a little goes a long way. The first thing I did when using the dark wax was  dabbing it on all of the major dents and dings. Really pressing it down into the crevices. Then I rubbed it on all of the edges. I very lightly brushed any remaining dark wax over the entire surface. Lastly I took a clean, old piece of t-shirt and rubbed the plaque down. Here is a picture of the before and after of the first plaque.

Once all of the plaques were banged up, painted, and waxed, I determined where I wanted the knobs to go. I chose to center them horizontally but to have them sit a bit higher vertically on the plaque. I used a drill to make the necessary size whole to fit the screw from the door knobs in. On the back of the plaque I used the dremel to create a large indentation around the whole so that when I screwed the nut onto the knob, it would sit down inside and be flush with the back of the plaque. This way when they hang on the wall they will be as close to laying flat as possible. See the finished product plaques below.

(From right to left the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint colors are: Old White, Coco, and Napoleonic Blue.)

The next thing is to glue the metal wall hangers onto the top of the backs of the plaques. There is an option to nail these with the tiny nails they come with but I prefer glue for fear of cracking.

Cutting the length of twine all depends on  how you want the guitars to hang. I cut about 2 feet and then held the guitars where I wanted them and held the looped twine from where it would hold the guitar up to the knob and pinched it where I would need to make the knot. Knot the twine, hang it on the knob, and trim off the excess.

Hanging the guitars is a little tricky. I twist the twine one time creating a figure 8 and then slide the head of the guitar up through the bottom of the bottom of the 8.

Here is the finished product! Leave a comment below and let me know what you think!

(Important Note: Make sure to reenforce the wholes in the walls with drywall anchors.)

First Official Giveaway!

So we had a rainy Saturday while in Hocking Hills last week and I took it as on opportunity to visit the Logan Antique Mall. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get everything I would have liked to due to the fact that our luggage took up most of the room in the trunk. I did get a couple of things though. Like this awesome antique rolling pin below.

I also found something else that I have been looking for, for quite some time, to put in one of our children's room. Even better, they had two! They were very fairly priced so I couldn't pass up the opportunity on buying them both even though I only needed one. SO! I am going to use the second one for my first giveaway!! I don't currently have any members at this time (insert sad face) so the first 25 members will be entered into a drawing to win this awesome piece I am working on! (It's a surprise!) All you have to do to enter the drawing is become an ACD Member. If you have any questions please comment below.

Bring the Great Outdoors, In

 (Above: Our Cabin)
Finally back to the usual grind after our yearly week long trip to Hocking Hills. Minimalism at its finest! True natural beauty. I myself am a huge fan of natural materials. Wood, cotton, stone, heck even dirt. There is something soothing about bringing natural elements into your home. They add warmth, texture, and depth; three of the most common words used by homeowners who are looking to decorate a desolate space.

Contrary to what many people think when introduced to the idea of adding natural elements into a room, these materials are not limited to just rustic designs. Natural elements can be used in modern designs as well. Take the use of the wood wall used in this modern living room below.

Or this picture! Very modern decor but the materials used are all woods and linens. Love this room!
Even by just adding some freshly picked flowers or a live plant can bring some life into a room. I always feel I can breathe better and the air is fresher when I have some foliage dispersed throughout the house. All year round too. Not just the spring and summer time!
(Above: Some flowers my wonderfully, thoughtful daughters picked for me on our trip.)
Just some more pictures of the family while spending time in Hocking Hills.

Ava's Room-The Beginning

My little girl is growing up. Out with the lullabies and onto the books. Goodbye baby dolls and hello Barbie. No more puppy dogs, rainbows, unicorns...well okay, she still loves unicorns.

So I was on a hunt for new accessories to put in my oldest daughter's room. We have lived in our home for two years now and she is "getting tired of staring at blank walls everyday". We tried to girly it up a bit by painting one wall purple and filling it with an amazing Craigslist furniture find, although those pieces need some TLC as well. I'm not much into doing anything character oriented even though she got some Monster High sheets and a quilt last Christmas. With characters she is changing her mind about whats her favorite way to frequently and there are always new dolls coming out. I want something that is going to be fun and girly and will be able to grow with her as she grows by doing minor upgrades here and there.

Well, I have found it! Thanks to a post from Blue Egg, Brown Nest I was introduced to a new designer duo at Pottery Barn Teen, Emily & Meritt. This new collection is vintage-glam meets Alice In Wonderland. And the best part (for my daughter anyway)? There are unicorns!
